Beginning in 2005, with funding from the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF), SNI collaborated with nationally recognized outpatient redesign experts, Coleman Associates, to improve the patient experience and the operational efficiency of outpatient services across the membership of the California Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems (CAPH).

This highly structured program aims to help public clinics redesign their medical office operations in order to complete a primary care visit in under an hour, and to increase provider productivity (number of patients seen per provider per hour)–all without reducing the valuable time a patient spends with his or her provider.

Forty-three public-hospital outpatient clinics have participated in the Patient Visit Redesign program to date. These teams have achieved, on average, a 50% reduction in visit time and a 29% increase in provider productivity. As a direct result of this work, patients report higher satisfaction in overall care, and now plan reliably around their appointment, knowing exactly how long their visit will take.

Now SNI and Coleman Associates are helping public hospital systems spread their successful redesigned patient visit models to additional clinics throughout their systems, including a pilot program to help local clinical leadership coach their teams more directly through process improvement methods.
